England vs Australia: Hosts Clear Favourites to Lift the Ashes 2019 Title – Michael Vaughan
Former England captain Michael Vaughan is confident that the Three Lions are favourites to lift the upcoming traditional Ashes 2019 against Australia. Interestingly, he has cited a strong reason for calling England favourites for the coveted multi-day tournament.
Vaughan believes the use of older Dukes will prove beneficial after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), has pushed the case for using the balls which were used in 2017. Hence, the older Dukes has a more seam to rely on for the bowlers.
“I now have England as the clear favourite to win the Ashes series,” Sydney Morning Herald quoted Vaughan, as saying.
Earlier, this month ECB has decided against the use of a current lot of Dukes.
“In English conditions, this ball was a massive thing for the (England) team. To use the Duke this year, it’s got no seam,” Vaughan added.
Ashes 2019: Michael Vaughan on the fitness of players –
The 44-year-old cricketer-turned-commentator Vaughan, however, believes there is plenty of time that who will feature in the much-awaited tourney. He added it couldn’t be said that who is going to remain fit while considering both the teams.
“But there is so much time between now and then that you don’t know who is going to be fit on both sides,” Vaughan added.
Under Vaughan’s captaincy between 2003 and 2008, England has played 51 Tests in which he has won 26 Tests lost 11 and settled with 14 drawn games.
Ashes: Vaughan on Smith and Warner:
Vaughan further elaborated that the return of Steven Smith and David Warner has improved the Aussie’s chances. He stated if the old ball won’t be used things would boil down to pace and spin, then Australia certainly has their opportunities in the United Kingdom (UK).
“It [Dukes] has not been swinging around in county cricket, it comes down to real pace and spin and you would say if it comes down to a pace and spin contest, Australia probably has got the edge,” Vaughan concluded.
The five-match Test series will begin with the Edgbaston Test on August first. The fifth and final Test will take place between September 12-16 at the Oval.
