England vs India 2018: Joe Root Should Bat at No 4 – Michael Vaughan

England Test skipper Joe Root should bat at number four, feels former captain Michael Vaughan ahead of the fourth Test between England and India at Southampton.

However, the fourth number spot is also his favoured batting position. Initially, Root began batting number three during the two-match Test series against Pakistan this year. The 27-year-old decided to take more responsibility after being at the helm of things for more than a year.

England suffered series defeats in both Australia and New Zealand where Root batted at No 3. Root, and has a brilliant overall average of 51.27 in Tests.

However, it falls quite significantly when he bats at No 3. Root has scored 2155 runs at an average of 52.56 at No 4. While batting at No 3, it goes down to 1534 runs in 22 matches at an average of 41.45.

Writing his column for the Telegraph before the start of the 4th Test against India, Vaughan said like Virat Kohli and Steven Smith; Joe Root should also bat at number four. However, he has been confirmed to bat at number three in the Southampton game.

“Virat Kohli bats at four, Steve Smith bats at four. The idea that the best batsman should bat at three is nonsense. In this era they often bat at four,” Vaughan wrote in his column for the Telegraph.

“I really believe that Joe Root should bat at four too. It’s where he wants to bat, and when your best player is so good, they should bat where they like – because that’s where they’ll make the most runs which is best for the team, just like with Kohli and Smith. I personally would go back to the best player at number four.

“Root’s got to bat in the position where he feels best-suited and then everyone else has to bat around. I don’t like that he’s been moved this summer.”

The fourth Test at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton begins on Thursday, and England, in the five-match Test series, leads with the margin of 2-1.
