England Vs South Africa 2017: AB de Villiers Declared Fit For First ODI

South Africa have got a big boost ahead of the first ODI against England, as skipper AB de Villiers has been declared fit for the Headingley game, to be played on May 24.

De Villiers missed both the practice game due to respiratory tract infection, which raised questions about his participation in the ODI series. But he has been cleared to take part in the ODIs.

“It doesn’t get any better than playing in England before a big tournament against the hosts in a competitive ODI series. The trick is to make sure that you still perform well; there is no use going down and feeling low on confidence going into the tournament. The secret for us is to compete as well as we can and try to get out on top in this series to go to the Champions Trophy feeling like we can beat anyone,” De Villiers said.

South African team management will be hoping for their mainstay batsman to perform well in the series so as to prepare well for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy.

De Villiers was injured last year and was sidelined from home and away series against Australia in 2016. He underwent an elbow surgery and made a comeback to international cricket in the third T20I against Sri Lanka where he went on to score a half-century.

He was retained for the Sri Lanka and New Zealand series but on the sideline, he ruled himself out from Test cricket. He skipped the Test series against New Zealand and has already announced that he will not be part of Test side for the England as well.

In fact, he also dropped his captaincy and Faf du Plessis has now been given the permanent duty to the lead the team.

The three-match ODI series between South Africa and England kick off from May 24 with the first game to be played in Headingley. the second and third ODI will be played on Mar 27 and 29, respectively.
