England Vs South Africa 2017 – Trevor Bayliss Concerned By Under Performers

Not many would have anticipated the tide to turn so quickly, as it eventually did at Nottingham in the second Test between England and South Africa. After being crushed at Lord’s and then going on to lose their premier pacer to an ICC ban, the Proteas stared at a complete low. Just the return of regular skipper Faf du Plessis however, turned the fortunes around as the visitors roared back ferociously.

On an overcast Nottigham morning, the decision to bat first was definitely a risky alternative, but it paid off as South Africa seized the initiative. From there on, there wasn’t any looking back as the Proteas went on to decimate England in both innings and script a famous turn around in the series, to have it 1-1, with two games to go.

Post the 340 runs drubbing at Trent Bridge, coach Trevor Bayliss was a worried individual. The Australian admitted that the lack of form of key personnel did tremendously hurt the team’s cause. In particular, the southpaw duo of Keaton Jennings and Gary Ballance have looked like mere club level players and have been all at sea against quality pacers.

Bayliss mentioned that despite performing well on the county circuit, it was concerning to see these players struggle at the highest level.

“All of those guys have been picked because they’ve done well in county cricket,” Bayliss said. “They probably started off well and have then fallen away a little. “So that’s a concern, obviously.”

“One of the things we’ve tried to do since I’ve come in is trying to give those guys a bit longer to show what they have got,” the England coach added. “It still hasn’t worked, to be honest.”
