England have announced an unchanged squad for the second Test against South Africa at Trent Bridge following their huge 211-run victory in the first match of the series at Lord’s on Sunday (July 9). Fast-bowler, Toby Roland-Jones, who has been retained in the squad, is likely to warm the bench in the next game also again as pace trio James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Mark Wood bowled well in the first innings and are really fresh after bowling after delivering only 10 overs between them in the second innings with spinner Moeen Ali and Liam Dawson operating in tandem on a turning track.
The hosts took a 1-0 lead in the four-match series with a thumping win on the fourth day of the match. England had begun the proceedings on the fourth day on a poor note, losing their last nine wickets for just 94 to get all out for 233 from 139 for 1. However, the 331-run lead turned out to be more than enough as the Proteas were bowled out for just 119 runs in 36.4 overs. James Anderson drew the first blood by dismissing Heino Kuhn on the last ball of the seventh over before the spinners took the mantle on themselves to guide England to the series lead. Moeen Ali was the star of the day, taking 6 for 53 while his fellow spinner Liam Dawson took 2 for 34 as Joe Root began his captaincy career in style.
South Africa, meanwhile, has been boosted by the return of regular skipper Faf du Plessis for the upcoming Test. Du Plessis missed the first Test as he was in South Africa for the birth of his first child but returned to England over the weekend. But at the same, the Proteas have suffered two big blows ahead of the important Test. The first is that Kagiso Rabada is suspended for the game while coach Russell Domingo has left for South Africa due to family issues.
England squad:
Joe Root (captain), Alastair Cook, Keaton Jennings, Gary Ballance, Jonny Bairstow(wkt), Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Liam Dawson, Stuart Broad, Mark Wood, James Anderson, Toby Roland-Jones.
