England Vs West Indies 2017 – Ewin Lewis Breaks Into Record Books After Epic Knock

For Ewin Lewis, the approach to being successful in ODI’s was quite simple indeed. He just had to adapt his T20 game into the 50 over arena and success would soon come his way. That is what exactly happened at the Oval today, as the southpaw wrecked havoc on the English bowlers. Thanks to his incredibly blazing knock, the Windies amassed a colossal 356 on board.
Lewis off late had been in some sparkling from across in the shortest form of the game, be it in the CPL or the one-off T20I against England. Today, however, he seemed to be in the groove right away as he seemed determined from the very offset.
Despite losing his top order partners quite frequently and being in a spot of bother at one stage with the team reduced to 33-3, Lewis didn’t lose hope and continued to play his natural game. Along with Jason Mohammad, Lewis was involved in a 117 run stand, and later towards the end, with skipper Jason Holder, as he tore into the English bowlers.
Lewis though, was extremely unfortunate as he had to retire hurt on 176 as his injury seemed to get the better from him. Finally, with the score at 318, Lewis walked off the field and with a little over three overs to go, the southpaw did miss out an opportunity to get to that elusive 200 mark.
As a result of his heroic knock, Lewis entered an array of record books as he now holds the record for the most number of runs in an innings for a batsman who has been retired hurt. The record was previously held by Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar, who was retired hurt on 163 in an ODI against New Zealand at Christchurch.
It does seem that Lewis indeed is emerging as a genuine match winner in ODI’s and the near future could well belong to him.
