Just as fans thought the morale boosting win at Leeds would result in West Indies churning out yet another impressive performance, all such hopes were found to be a hoax. Electing to bat first on an overcast morning in London and with the pitch exhibiting shades of green, it was a decision that backfired to a great extent for the visitors.
England struck quite early, with James Anderson removing opener Kraigg Brathwaite, caught behind of an absolute peach of a delivery. However, the star of the day for England with the ball was all rounder, Ben Stokes.
While Stokes has mainly been England’s savior with the bat in recent times, playing some counter attacking knocks, this time around it was with the ball, where Stokes did the bulk of the damage.
Bowling with conditions assisting him, it didn’t take long for the medium fast bowler to strike. The all rounder carried on his good form as he sent back an array of the visiting batsmen. When he cleaned up number XI Shanon Gabriel, Stokes registered his career best figures of 6-22.
It was a spell which put forward the worth of Stokes as a complete match winner, and below, is the video of his sensational spell from the first day.
England too were rocked early though and ended the first day in a delicate position of 46-4. The first session of the second day will pretty much dictate the outcome of the game and series.
