Destructive England opener Jason Roy has entered the IPL auction which will be held in Bengaluru on February 4. The right-handed batsman though is not the only Englishman to make the cut. Earlier, it was reported that all-rounder Ben Stokes has also entered the auction.
During the recently concluded ODI series against India, Jason Roy was the most successful batsman for England. He, in all three matches, notched up half-centuries. His highest score was 82 runs, which came in the Pune ODI. Despite failing to convert his good starts into big tons in the series, he averaged 73.33 at a strike-rate of 115.78.
Just before the start of first T20I on Thursday, it was announced that Roy has been the newest entrant in the list and the batsman was gracious enough to thank his county club Surrey for his progress in international circuit.
He also said playing in the IPL was one of his dream and he’ll be lucky to live it (If he gets picked up by any franchise).
“Playing in the IPL is a big ambition of mine, and I hope it can be achieved this year. Surrey will always be my Club, and the levels of support we get for our sell out T20s at the Kia Oval is amazing. I really enjoy playing in front of big audiences and I think it brings out the best in me. The IPL is the next step, before returning for duty with England and Surrey.”
Surrey CCC Director of Cricket Alec Stewart added Roy will only improve his game while playing in the IPL. The lucrative league is believed to provide an ocean exposure to the players and Stewart believes the league will add richness to his knowledge.
“Jason has shown he is one of the most exciting, destructive and entertaining batsmen in world cricket. Playing in the IPL will grow his cricketing experience and knowledge which can only help develop his game for both Surrey and England.”
India and England will face off in first of the three T20Is at Green Park stadium in Kanpur on Thursday.
