India trumped England in the first One-Dayer in Pune on Sunday and opener KL Rahul is all but happy with the start of the series. Speaking to media prior to the second ODI at Cuttack, Rahul said he is happy that Virat has now taken over the captaincy and that the side enjoys playing under his leadership, given his on the face attitude.
Rahul hailed his captain, saying, he sets an example for the team and has proven himself time and time again with the magnificent run-chases. He further added, Virat’s ability to build innings has inspired everyone and that the vibes he shares with the squad keep the camp happy and energetic all the time.
“It is about how he (Kohli) has set examples for us. He has gone out there and done the job for the team many times. We look up to him and we see how he builds his innings, the kind of energy, enthusiasm and the passion he has on the field. It spreads on all of us. We learn a lot from him.”
Calling him a team man, Rahul admitted that Virat shares his experience with the youngsters and help and they get over personal obstacles too. He, however, called the country’s poster boy as a great leader with a brighter future lying ahead of him.
“He is somebody who is not just looking to have great performances individually but he wants to take the team along. He is always showing us the way, sharing his experience and giving us feedback, telling us what he thinks we could have done better. That is the sign of a great leader.”
Happy with Virat’s involvement, Rahul said he knows a bit or two about Kohli’s captaincy, as he has played under him in different formats, in Tests and also in IPL. Known to owe an aggressive approach, Virat has been a team man and so far has fetched victories only.
“We are enjoying playing under him. It has just been one game (ODI) but who have been part of the Test team we know how aggressive he is as a captain. We love playing under Virat. He has always supported me and other boys.”
“It is good to have a young leader as well and also to have MS (Dhoni) in the team. Not only will Dhoni guide Virat as a skipper but also the youngsters like us. Good to have both of them in the team and learn from them.”
India and England will face in the second ODI in Cuttack on Thursday (January 19).
