Eoin Morgan could compliment Andre Russell’s power-hitting as England’s World Cup-winning skipper gets ready to do so when Kolkata Knight Riders take the field in this edition of IPL 2020.

One of the more stable middle-order batsmen in the limited-overs cricket, Eoin Morgan was bought by KKR at the auction after they looked heavily dependable on Andre Russell to finish close games as they missed the qualifiers by a whisker in 2019.

Eoin Morgan Will Aid Andre Russell Who Has Performed Finishers Role Exceptionally Well

An Irish-born Englishman with a reputation for inventive stroke-play, Eoin Morgan has overtime proved to be one of the most exceptional players in international cricket. He is a natural finisher and has spent most of his IPL career with KKR but represented SRH in 2015 and 2016 and KXIP in 2017. The 2019 World Cup-winning captain makes a return to the Knight Riders color in 2020 after being one of the top-buys for KKR in the Auction.

“I know (Andre) Russell has done that role significantly well for a number of years for Kolkata. He’s done exceptionally well. If I get a go, hopefully I will be able to aid that,” Morgan said during a virtual media interaction from the team hotel, on the eve of their match against four-time defending champions Mumbai Indians.

The KKR vice-captain Eoin Morgan further said he is more experienced now having won the World Cup 2019 than the last time he represented KKR in 2011 and 2013 and his batting is coming off really well.
“I think it’s been quite a few years since I played (at KKR). Just looking at batting, my game has really come on quite a lot in the last three to four years. I would like to think I’ve come on quite well,” Morgan, who will be back at the franchise after his stint from 2011-2013, said.
Eoin Morgan has so far amassed 854 runs in 52 matches averaging a modest 21.35 but has not featured in any IPL squad since 2017.

Eoin Morgan: KKR Have Very Versatile Cricketers Who Can Control Batting Unit

Besides Eoin Morgan, KKR have also boosted their batting unit with his compatriot Tom Banton who became a sensation in the Big Bash League, while the bowling combination too, looks fiery with the addition of Australian vice-captain pacer Pat Cummins. Pat Cummins like Eoin Morgan had represented KKR earlier in 2014 and 2015 and was the most expensive buy ever at the IPL auction. KKR bought him for as much as 15.5 crores.
“I think with the squad that we have, it gives us better options, particularly in batting and bowling. I think within the squad we have a number of very versatile cricketers who can specifically control the batting department,” Morgan said.
Eoin Morgan said the pitches in UAE especially in Dubai looked more similar to the English conditions with seamers getting some movements early on.
“Having watched the (three) games so far, the wickets have been more similar to English conditions,” he said.

After their last season’s failure to reach the playoffs, KKR also have restructured their coaching unit making their former player and New Zealand’s former skipper wicket-keeper Brendon McCullum as the head coach. Brendon McCullum will work together with former Australian batsman David Hussey, who is designated as chief mentor, and former Kiwi pacer Kyle Mills. Eoin Morgan said he shares a good rapport with the coach of KKR.
“We have been very good friends for a number of years now. When it comes to sports that we enjoy horse racing, as well. Both of us really enjoy the experience,” Morgan signed off.
KKR looks strong and are title contenders with the inclusions of England’s Tom Banton and Eoin Morgan in batting. Shubman Gill will open the batting with Sunil Narine, while Nitish Rana will bat in the middle order along with Eoin Morgan and skipper Dinesh Karthik.
Pat Cummins will spearhead the pace attack alongside Lockie Ferguson, while the spin bowlers will be Kuldeep Yadav and uncapped Varun Chakraborty. Shivam Mavi, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Sandeep Warrier, and Prasidh Krishna will be the Indian pacers. And no one can forget all-rounder Andre Russell who has a strike rate of nearly 200 in IPL.
