England skipper Eoin Morgan has lauded his bowling attack which had played a crucial role in England’s win against Australia in an epic encounter. England had just put up a meagre score of 162 on the board, which the Australian’s looked initially comfortably cruising towards.
However, the game changed in the last 6 overs with Australia needing just 39 runs with 9 wickets in hand. A quick fall of wickets saw Australia’s middle order failing to reach the target just by 2 runs.
Australia need 15 runs off the last over to win, which was bowled by Tom Curran and were only able to get 12 off it. In the T20I opener, Australia won the toss and opted to field.
Eoin Morgan hailed England bowlers’ match-winning performance
Australia had a good start with both openers Aaron Finch and David Warner scoring 46 and 58 respectively. The match changed after the 15th over when Adil Rashid took quick wickets of Steve Smith (18) and Glenn Maxwell (1) in the same over. Eoin Morgan was all praises for his bowlers who he said were difficult to play for anyone coming from outside.
“Some of our pace bowlers and Adil have posed that threat, making it particularly difficult for people coming in and facing them straight away. I think after Moeen’s over, things started to turn for us. We got the ball reverse-swinging a little bit, but again, creating that opportunity with Adil getting Maxwell and Smith created that opportunity,” ESPNcricinfo quoted Morgan as saying.
The England bowlers showed belief and courage which won them the match
Eoin Morgan applauded the bowlers showing courage and belief to make a difference in the game. Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid both took two wickets each.
“I thought we might end up running out of our best bowlers earlier, but they seemed to continue to take risks, particularly against Adil and then Jof (Jofra Archer) came back earlier as a consequence of that. I’m delighted the guys showed belief and courage to do something to take wickets, and that was displayed a lot in the last six overs when we held our length a lot because it was the hardest to hit,” he added.
The next match will be played on Sunday at the same ground in Southampton. England have a lead of 1-0 in the three-match T20I series which Australia would want to even in the impending fixture.
The Australian team is placed at number one spot in T20s in the ICC world rankings. However, it was their first international match after the pandemic-triggered lockdown which may be a reason for their rusty approach. England have been playing since July and this is their third series after the break.
