The ESPN World Fame list of 2017 has been revealed. It is a list that features the best athletes of sports all around the world depending on their popularity and other stats and performance analysis.
Portuguese international and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo tops ESPN’s World Fame 100 for the second straight year, followed by LeBron James, Lionel Messi, Roger Federer and Phil Mickelson. India captain Virat Kohli sits in the 13th spot, whereas, former captain MS Dhoni follows him at the 15th position.
Ben Alamar, ESPN’s director of analytics, devises a formula that combines endorsements with social media following and internet search popularity to create the ESPN World Fame 100 rankings.
He weighs athletes’ endorsements, their following on the social media Big Three (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) and Google search popularity, producing a comparative ranking system. The analysis includes five categories: endorsement money, Twitter followers, Instagram followers, Facebook followers and Google Trends score.
With 35 total entrants, Americans dominate. There are only seven entrants from India and China combined, despite the fact those two countries contain more than a one-third of the world’s population. Social-media uptake tends to reward those athletes who take the effort to cultivate their brand online.
Virat and Dhoni are currently the Indian superstars having quite a lot number of followers worldwide and brands attached to their names.
