Sourav Ganguly, a member of Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of BCCI, who will pick the next coach of Indian cricket team has said everybody has got the right to apply for the post of Head Coach. His comments have come in wake of Ravi Shastri applying for this job,
“Everybody has got the right to apply. We will find out. I can also apply provided I’m not an administrator,” Ganguly told PTI.
News of Shastri putting his hat in the ring came yesterday (June 28), when he himself confirmed the news to a newspaper. Him applying for a job is no surprise, as it was learned that that BCCI has approached him to take fill the vacant place. Shastri needed an assurance before applying for it that he will be given the role. Though this news was denied by the former Indian all-rounder. This is no secret that Indian skipper Virat Kohli and Shastri shares a good rapport and Shastri has an edge over everyone in the race. Last year too, he was the strongest contender in the list until Anil Kumble became one of the participants, who overtook Shastri to get the job. However, within one year, the untenable relation between the coach and the captain resulted in Kumble quitting the job as soon as his tenure came to end, despite the fact that he was given an extension for the tour of West Indies.
CAC might start the interview from July 10, a day after the deadline to apply for the job ends. This time though we will see Shastri thinking about the job much seriously as last time, he was not present during the interview in person and was interviewed via Skype. Though Ganguly was the notable absentee at the time of the interview, which later became an issue and both of them commented against each other in public.
Shastri blamed Ganguly for not being there at the time of his interview and was disappointed by this. Ganguly too answered Shastri and said that Shastri was living in a fool’s world. After series of attacks and counter-attacks, the matter came to an end.
This time though, CAC might find it difficult to reject Shastri’s application, due to the rapport he shares with Virat Kohli. Previously, Shastri worked as the director of Indian cricket team from the year 2014 to 2016.
