Everyone Has A Right To Choose Their Careers: Vernon Philander On Kyle Abbott’s Decision
Newlands in Cape Town is hosting the second Test between South Africa and Sri Lanka, and its not the scorecard which is making any noise, but rather Kyle Abbott’s decision to sign the Kolpak deal with Hampshire.
Vernon Philander, one of the all-rounders from South Africa, has backed Abbott’s decision, saying everyone has a right to pick up the right career for themselves. If Abbott finds playing in Hampshire more suitable than playing for South Africa, then he must stick to it.
“That’s a personal decision that each player has to make for himself and we’ve got to respect that decision as fellow players. If they feel that is the best route going forward for them in their careers then, by all means. It’s a personal decision you have to make as a player and we respect that.”
After making his Test debut against Pakistan in Centurion 2013, Abbott had to wait for more than a year to get his next Test cap. Earlier in the year, Abbott and Hampshire shared the table for discussion before the Australian series, where the right-handed bowler played an instrumental role in helping Proteas registering a 2-1 win over the hosts.
With the ocean of talent he possesses and considering the lack of opportunities he has been granted to showcase that on the international stage, Abbott’s choice of leaving the national side to get first team cricket in England doesn’t sound that bad on a personal note. Talking about the team, South Africa will be surely get weakened with his omission as for them, workhorse Dale Steyn is like an old horse and they don’t have another potential replacement for him.
However, if it happens, he won’t be the first player to sign a Kolpak deal as likes of Stiaan van Zyl (Sussex), Hardus Viljoen (Derbyshire) and Simon Harmer (Essex) have done the same.
