As the discussion of former skipper MS Dhoni is taking place on most of the TV channels, former explosive opener Virender Sehwag had also joined one of the panels which also handed him an opportunity to speak about himself. In an interview alongside former Team India selector Sandip Patil, Sehwag looked enraged who further took a dig at Patil for a premature end to his career.

Pertinently, the veteran batsman had announced his retirement in 2015. It came after selectors left his career in limbo for over 20 months. Thus, he had developed a grudge with Patil who was the then selector.

Sehwag had slammed Patil for not letting him know about the future plans. Following the appearance of Shikhar Dhawan in 2013, Sehwag had been sidelined in the national team. Sehwag, who made his appearance is the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) further featured in the domestic set-up before bidding adieu to international cricket.

Even though Dhawan had proved his mettle, Sehwag maintained that selectors are bound to inform players, which is an ideal way for not keeping players’ career in limbo or the vice versa.

While discussing on the ABP New Channel, Sehwag had lashed out at ex-chief selector Patil. In the meantime, Patil eventually tried to make a point. However, Sehwag reiterated that the then selectors had committed a mistake.

With Patil defending his statement, he asserted that he alongside Rajinder Singh Hans were handed a responsibility to speak to Sachin Tendulkar. However, Vikram Rathour was asked to converse with Sehwag.

Furthermore, Patil added if Vikram had failed to speak to Sehwag, he extends an apology to Sehwag for the same.

“The responsibility to talk to Sachin (Tendulkar) about his future was given to me and Rajinder Singh Hans. Well, the same responsibility was given to Vicky (Vikram Rathour) for Sehwag. We had asked him and he said he had spoken with Sehwag. But if Sehwag is saying that Vikram did not talk to him, I would like to take responsibility for the same,” Patil addressed Sehwag on ABP News.

Sehwag, who is known for his bold approach, had further stated that Vikram should have spoken to him before selectors dropped him from the team.

Also, the veteran opener had cited an example of Dhoni that if current chief selector MSK Prasad will speak to the wicketkeeper-batsman after being dropped, then there is no point in talking.

The 40-year-old also stressed that selectors should speak to those players before they are left out from the team.

“Vikram spoke to me after I was dropped. It would have made sense if he spoke to me before that. There’s no point talking to a cricketer once he is dropped. If MSK Prasad speaks to Dhoni after he is dropped, what would Dhoni say – that he would play first-class cricket. And the selectors should pick him if he scores runs. The point is that the selectors should reach out to cricketers before they are dropped,” Sehwag maintained.

The Najafgarh-born Sehwag had made his international debut in 1999. He had featured in 251 ODIs, 104 Tests and 19 T20Is for India.
