Farokh Engineer slams Harbhajan Singh for criticizing Ravi Ashwin
Former Indian cricketer Farokh Engineer has slammed out of favor spinner Harbhajan Singh recently. Harbhajan was seen criticizing Ravi Ashwin for his ordinary show during the Test series against Australia. India won the series by a margin of 2-1, creating a unique record on foreign soil. Ashwin has been a core member of the Test line-up and is known to be an ace spinner.
Harbhajan Singh faces flak
Engineer wasn’t happy with Harbhajan’s comments as he felt it was out of order and totally uncalled.”Did you read Harbhajan’s comments about Ashwin, he was out of order there. What is first spinner and second spinner? Spinner is a spinner,” said Engineer during a talk show organised by Legends Club at the Cricket Club of India here Wednesday evening.
Ashwin’s role gets questioned
The former great felt the slamming was a bit tasteless as Harbhajan himself is a spinner. It was Ashwin who replaced Harbhajan in the Indian team and since then the veteran failed to make a successful return. “Ashwin is a great bowler. It appeared to me he (Harbhajan) was critical of Ashwin. You don’t wash dirty linen in public especially on an off-spinner who has replaced you. It’s like (Mahendra Singh) Dhoni criticising (Rishabh) Pant. It’s not cricket,” said Engineer.
Harbhajan commented in the media that Ashwin got injured at a time when the visitors needed him the most. He also went on to add that Kuldeep Yadav bowled extremely well and should be considered as the number one spinner in Tests, Apart from Kuldeep, Bhajji suggested that Ravindra Jadeja can be India’s number two spinner. As per Harbhajan, the duo will add much needed strength to the Indian line-up and took a slight dig at Ashwin. This is not the first time when the ex-Indian spinner has been seen slamming Ashwin. In the past, Harbhajan claimed that he would have ended up with more wickets had India played on rank turners like the recent past.
Harbhajan last represented India in 2016 in a T20I. He was seen in whites, playing for India back in 2015. The spinner has been out of form in domestic cricket and failed to make an impact even in the Indian Premier League. The 38-year-old has played 103 Test matches, picking 417 wickets.
