Down with fever Suresh Raina to miss the first ODI against New Zealand

The Indian middle order batsman Suresh Raina has been ruled out of the first ODI against New Zealand due to viral fever. Raina, who was making a comeback in the Indian team after missing out the T20 series against West Indies in Florida, fell ill whilst leading the Uttar Pradesh squad during their first Ranji Trophy game against Madhya Pradesh. He did not come out to bat in both the innings and reports suggest that he left the game mid-way and flew back home to recover before the ODI series but he hasn’t been able to recover before the first ODI and hence been ruled out for the first ODI of the series as of now.

News of him missing the first ODI have been made public by BCCI who tweeted about Raina being suffering from viral fever and will not be able to take part in the first ODI.

Raina is not the first causality to the Indian team as earlier a total of 4 players namely Ishant Sharma, KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar got injured during the Test series. Though Gautam Gambhir also retired during the final Test match but he came out to bat in the third innings of the game and did not let the perishable chance slip off his hands.

Injury concern has been a big concern for New Zealand team as well as the visitors first suffered a blow in form of Tim Southee who returned to the country soon as he landed here. Mark Craig followed him, Jimmy Neesham was also out for first two Test matches before being available for the final Test match. Kane Willaimson also missed a game due to illness.

This has been injury prone series for both the teams with crucial players missing most of the games in the series. The first ODI is scheduled to be played in Dharamsala on October 16.

India squad: MS Dhoni(Capt/wk), Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli, Manish Pandey, Suresh Raina, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Jayant Yadav, Amit Mishra, Jasprit Bumrah, Dhawal Kulkarni, Umesh Yadav, Mandeep Singh, Kedar Jadhav.
