We Have To Find Our Own Way To Deal With Spin In India: Peter Handscomb
Australia new-comer Peter Handscomb has said his team will have to devise a new way to counter Indian spinners in the upcoming four-match Test series against the world number one team.
Australia have endured a horrid time in the sub-continent in the last one decade or so. Since the Test against Bangladesh in 2006 when Jason Gillespie’s double century led them to a huge win, the team from Down Under has won just one Test. Since then, they have lost 13 of the 17 Tests they’ve played in Asia – including the 3-0 whitewash in Sri Lanka last year.
Steven Smith’s men had left no stone unturned in order to win the series in Sri Lanka but everything went wrong for them as an inexperienced Sri Lankan team thrashed them. Australia must have learnt their lessons from that series and Handscomb has said finding a new way after going to India instead of a going with a certain mindset is better.
“The biggest thing is about us going over there and finding our own way to deal with the spin,” Handscomb was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.
“It’s all good and well other people telling us how to play it but if that’s not in our game plan, it’s not going to be great. So we’ll have time over there to formulate the way we’re going to play and if each player can stick to that plan and back their own skills, I’m sure we’ll be fine,” he added.
Speaking on his plans to play in the tough Indian conditions, Handscomb said:
“You’ve got to work so hard to get your runs, and you’ve got to have different strategies at different times of a game. That’s probably what I’ve learned…you’ve got to be adaptable and you’ve got to be able to change your game almost mid-innings.”
“Even for the Indian players…they change all the way through their innings. Hopefully we can do similar stuff.”
Australia start their series in Pune on February 23 before heading to Bengaluru, Dharamsala and Ranchi for the remaining Tests.
