India captain Rohit Sharma has given a massive update on the fitness of batter Shreyas Iyer ahead of the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023 tournament which will be played in India from October 5 onwards.
Shreyas, a key player in the middle order for India, has been out of action since playing against Sri Lanka early this year. He was diagnosed with a back injury and despite attempts to rectify the issue with medicines and therapy, Iyer was advised to undergo surgery after the issue cropped up against him during the Australia Test series at home.
This led to him missing the IPL, and subsequent series, and will most likely miss the Asia Cup tournament as well.
Shreyas Iyer Is On Track: Rohit Sharma
Shreyas Iyer, along with KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna and Rishabh Pant had been recuperating, recovering and rehabbing a the NCA in Bengaluru. And while Bumrah and Prasidh have been declared fit and named in the India squad for Ireland T20Is.
KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are still rehabbing and while Rahul has started batting and keeping in nets, there has been no such update on Shreyas Iyer. However, India captain Rohit Sharma said that Iyer is on track to achieve full fitness and the team has kept fingers crossed over him.
“Shreyas Iyer is on the track to full fitness, so fingers crossed for World Cup,” Sharma said at an event in USA.
The pair began practicing in preparation for an India comeback, which is another source of relief for the country’s supporters. Iyer and Rahul recently shared batting videos on social media. Rahul was also observed practicing his wicket-keeping.
Prior to this, the BCCI had not issued any formal statements regarding Rahul and Iyer’s fitness in almost a week. On the Internet, a number of reports with various accusations about the pair have surfaced. While some sources claimed Rahul and Iyer wouldn’t likely participate in the next Asia Cup, others claimed the former was available for the regional competition.
