Even before IPL 9 start severe water crisis in Latur, Maharashtra grappled the tournament. Surendra Srivastava, who is a big cricket fan, filed a PIL in Bombay High Court to stop hosting IPL matches in Maharashtra as gallons of water was being used to make the pitch batting friendly when people of Latur were not getting a drop of water. Bombay High Court asked BCCI to shift the matches from Maharashtra and not to waste a drop of water for IPL. BCCI initially was not agreed as they said Maharashtra will 100 crores if IPL matches shifted to other Indian cities. The controversy divided many cricket fans as the humanitarian issue has become pervasive. Many cricket fans boycott IPL and supported the PIL.
Finally, BCCI agreed to shift the match out of Maharashtra, Rising Pune Super Giants chose Vizag and Mumbai Indians Jaipur as adopted home for 2016 IPL season.
