Five Records Created by Team India in 2017

2017 so far has been a brilliant year for the Virat Kohli-led Indian side. As a unit, the Men in Blue have emerged as a ruthless powerhouse, decimating all opposition coming their way.

This dominance is not restricted to just the shorter forms of the game, but even to Test cricket, as India currently enjoy a streak of consecutive eight series victories. Another series victory in the upcoming home season against Sri Lanka would see them equaling the world record.

From a personal front as well for the players, this year has seen several Indian players making it big concerning personal achievements and fastest. Be it skipper Virat Kohli’s extraordinary run with the bat or R. Ashwin’s unparalleled brilliance with the ball, Indians continue to rule the roost.

The recently concluded tour of Sri Lanka too saw the visitors creating an ocean of records, and adding to their brilliance in 2017. Keeping that in mind, below, we have a look at five unique records created by the Indians this year.

  1. R. Ashwin quickest to 250 Test wickets:

In the one-off Test against Bangladesh at Hyderabad in February this year, Ashwin became the fastest bowler to reach 250 Test scalps regarding matches.

The last 24 months have been dictated by the off-spinner’s sheer enigma with the ball, as he remains a single handed match-winner for the Virat Kohli-led Indian outfit.

Against Bangladesh, which also marked the side’s first ever Test in India, Ashwin took the 250th Test wicket of his career, and in his 45th Test, became the quickest to get to the rare feat. The second on the list is former Australian pace legend Dennis Lillee, who took 250 wickets in 48 games.

  1. MS Dhoni’s 100 ODI stumpings:

MS Dhoni clearly remains the greatest wicketkeeper to have played the game, and his mind boggling numbers in the ODI’s, speak for themselves.

In the first week of January this year, Dhoni relieved himself of captaincy, to enjoy solely as a keeper batsman and to prolong his career. So far, Dhoni has had a tremendous year indeed, amassing runs with ease.

Apart from that though, the former skipper has also enjoyed wicketkeeping and created a world record in the final ODI against Sri Lanka recently.

When he stumped Akila Dananjaya off Yuzvendra Chahal, Dhoni became the first keeper in the game’s history to get to 100 ODI stumpings, a precious feat indeed.

  1. Virat Kohli’s Four Consecutive Double Centuries:

Ever since he was appointed as India’s Test captain, Virat Kohli has taken his game just to the next level. His dominance as a batsman has been depicted by his sheer run making spree and the ease with which he applies himself and bosses the arena makes for a spectacle of the highest order.

In that very one-off Test against Bangladesh in February, Kohli scored an impeccable double century, which incidentally, also made him the first batsman in Test cricket’s history to have four consecutive double centuries in as many series’.

Starting from his double century against the West Indies at Antigua, Kohli scored three more, against New Zealand at Indore, against England at Mumbai and finally against Bangladesh at Hyderabad, to create the rare feat.

  1. Virat Kohli Becoming the Quickest to 15,000 International Runs:

As said earlier, 2017 in so many ways has been the year of Virat Kohli. Breaking record after record, the Indian captain remains in a league of his own. Against Sri Lanka in the one-off T20I at Colombo a couple of nights ago, the Indian skipper brought up his 15,000 career international runs for himself, across the three forms of the game.

However, that wasn’t the end of it alone, as Kohli became the quickest batsman to get there, as he got to the mark in just 333 innings, bettering the tally of Hashim Amla, who got there in three more innings.

Apart from that, Kohli remains the only batsman to have 15,000 international runs and average more than 50.

  1. India’s historic 9-0 score line against Sri Lanka:

The tour of Sri Lanka was a colossal success for the Indian side, as apart from just remaining unbeaten across formats, the Men in Blue achieved a 9-0 score line. The scoreline consisted of a 3-0 victory in the Test series, followed by a 5-0 ODI series whitewash and finally the victory in the one-off T20I.

By achieving the 9-0 score line and dominance across all formats, India became the first team to whitewash an opposition in all forms of the game, away from home. It is a record which just speaks volumes about the sheer ruthlessness of the Indian side.
