Former BCCI selector Gagan Khoda has revealed why Ambati Rayudu wasn’t picked up for India’s World Cup 2019 squad. The Indian team was unbeaten in the World Cup 2019 campaign until their loss to New Zealand in the semi-finals. However, the team was always dicey about the starting lineup.
The loss had broken the hearts of millions of Indian fans and the board suffered the blame to not have chosen the perfect team. The biggest debacle was the number 4 spot. Ambati Rayudu who was the strongest in contention to make it for the spot wasn’t considered for the team. All-rounder Vijay Shankar was called up for his versatility. The injury to Vijay Shankar in the campaign forced for a backup call and Rishabh Pant was picked over the likes of Ambati Rayudu.
He Was Getting Stagnant Says Gagan Khoda
The former Indian batsman told Sportskeeda that they had observed Ambati Rayudu for years and his game was stagnant and there wasn’t enough confidence in him which forced them to drop him.
“Ambati Rayudu was experienced and you were looking at the World Cup. We carried on with him for a year but we felt he was getting stagnant. The confidence level going into the World Cup wasn’t there. We couldn’t get any youngster in because the tournament was in England also,” said Gagan Khoda
Gagan Khoda Didn’t Consider The Team Weak In Any Aspect
The selection and management team had to face a lot of backlash from the cricket fraternity post-India’s exit from the World Cup. The ex selector said there was no fault in the team, it was just a bad phase. Many fans had the opinion that if India had an experienced middle-order the outcome would have been different.
“I never thought we were weak anywhere. It was just one bad day that we had. One day the match didn’t happen, the next day it happens and the momentum finishes. You have to start all over again, and it happens,” he said.
Ambati Rayudu condemned his rejection BCCI and had announced his retirement from International Cricket, but he revoked it after a few months. The Hyderabad batsman still hopes to make a comeback in the Indian team.
