Four Indian Women fans faced the rage from a bunch of rowdy Sri Lankan supporters during the opening ODI between the two teams at the Rangiri International Stadium in Dambulla. After a disappointing Test series, the story was the same in the opening ODI and the Lankans were no match for the Men in Blue so each time the Indian spectators cheered for the visitors the Sri Lankan supporters got infuriated.
It was initially a friendly banter between the fans but the situation turned ugly when the Indian Women supporters took a dig at the verbal chants hurled at them. Before the start of the Indian innings, some of the Sri Lankan supporters tried to get under the skin of many Indian spectators but the Sri Lankan policeman intervened and took charge of the matter.
Frustrations took a toll on the spectators as the team suffered yet another humiliating loss. The supporters crowded the team bus and shouted at the players even before the players came and boarded the bus. The Sri Lankan policeman was quick to respond for yet another time as they took charge of the matter with batons and riot shields as the players made their way back into the team hotel pretty safely.
“You get frustrated. Am I angry with the players? Absolutely not. The players work as hard as anyone can ask of them. They’ve been superb. Support staff have been out of this world. Brilliant. They work endless hours with planning and helping the boys. You can’t fault anyone within that changing room,” Sri Lanka’s interim coach Nic Pothas said during the post-match press conference as the spectators let their frustration out.
After batting first the Sri Lankans got off to a brilliant start courtesy Niroshan Dickwella and Danushka Gunathilaka but a middle order collapse left them stuttering before eventually getting bowled out for 216 in 43 overs. It was a cake walk for theMen in Blue as they romped home by 9 wickets with more than 22 overs to spare. Shikar Dhawan scored a brilliant unbeaten century while Kohli too continued his rich vein in the limited overs format.
