From England To India: Haseeb Hameed Finds Solace In Writing A Letter To His Mumbai Coach

“Thank you for all your relentless efforts, dedication and hard work. And of course your insight and expertise,” reads the very first paragraph of Haseeb Hameed’s letter to his Mumbai Coach, Vidyadhar Paradkar which is heartwarming to see as a fan of cricket, who follows cricket like a food.

It’s a dream of every young cricketer to debut in Tests – to make his/her country and their family proud. The impressive 19-year-old baby faced Haseeb Hameed found it true to his cause while serving the English team in India on his very first outing, but unfortunately not for so long after injuring himself during the second Test at Vizag.

Haseeb Hameed's family has migrated from Gujarat.

Having the quest for improving his skills, Bolton-born Hameed has returned to India to support his English side in their final two Tests.

“I have no doubt that I have developed my game a lot under your watchful guidance and I have learnt things from you that I will use throughout my career,” the letter further reads before being called as a “short note” for thanksgiving.

Coming from Lancashire in 2011, Hameed was then a 14-year-old when he was mentored by Vidyadhar Paradkar, a Mumbai coach. The little star found his coach’s inputs worthy during five-week cricket training programme held in Mumbai.

“I gave him some cone drills: keep your bat straight and hit the cone, keep your foot on the line of the ball, bring your bat down in a line, and he did it a hundred times. He would put a ball on a cone and try to hit it in all directions of the ground. He played three club matches at that time and remained not out in all of them. Then I knew he would go a long way.” Vidyadhar recalled of Hameed as a 14-year-old.

On his return to India after five years, Hameed played through pain and that has been the reason to talk about, before his letter surfaced over the web to become the news point.

“He was a much better batsman the second time he came. I was very sure at that time his Test debut would come soon. The way he would use his bat, the way he would play the ball from mid-off to midwicket with a straight bat” Vidyadhar added.

With sheer courage and determination, Hameed scored unbeaten 59 in Mohali Test while playing with a finger broken which reflected how passionate he’s for the game of cricket before getting a pat on the back from Indian star performer and skipper Virat Kohli.

It’s always great to see a young lad like Hameed, who’s an inspiration for many – to see him delivering early in his career while showing great patience and mental ability.

“We appreciate your sincerity, help and are looking forward to welcoming you in England for the Test match at Lord’s. If we can assist you in any way, it will be our pleasure,” it [letter] says.

Lucky charm Hameed has also his family in India during the English tour and his name holds the right meaning as “Servant of the Praiseworthy” and “the ever-praised” and this holds true while seeing him holding the bat over the ground.

Hameed in the first Test against India at Rajkot in November this year became the youngest debutant to open for England in a Test.

Banking on his performance, Hameed played three Tests while scoring 219 runs at an average of 43.80 which includes two fifties with a highest score of 82.

“Thank you once again. All the best for future to you and your family,” it concludes.

Hameed had faced 640 balls which is spread over his 6 innings off 3 Tests and will be back soon to play it like he did in his first International series at his second home.

While being dubbed as “Baby Boycott” for his composed style, Haseeb’s excellent adventure in India and letter would certainly be the best ever gift to his coach that he would be cherishing for so long in cricket.
