6 Front-runners for the team India coach

As soon as BCCI released an advertisement for the post of team India’s head coach, it was flooded with applications from a lot of high profile cricketers. The BCCI announced that it has received as many as 57 applicants for the position. With BCCI all set to announce the name of the new coach in the coming weeks, we are presenting to you some applicants who are the front-runner for the high profile job.

6. Lalchand Rajput:

He did not have a very impressive playing career, but he tasted good success as a coaching staff. After his playing days, he served as the joint honorary secretary of the Mumbai Cricket Association. He became the coach of the India Under-19 team. He was appointed cricket manager before India’s successful campaign at the ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa and held the position till the tour of Australia in 2007-08. He then took over as the coach of the Mumbai Indians in the inaugural IPL.

5. Venkatesh Prasad:

Following retirement, the retired pacer took to coaching as he  trained the Under-19 side and later took the role of  coach of his state side Karnataka. He was appointed India’s bowling coach for the tour of Bangladesh in May 2007. Prasad received accolades from various members of the Indian squad and worked well with India’s promising new-ball pair, Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma. His coaching stint with the team coincided with one of the best phases of team India as they won test series in England and New Zealand. Apart from that he also worked as bowling coach for the IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings.

4. Pravin Amre:

Only a few have made a hundred on debut in a Test match on foreign soil and for many it is a dream come true. Praveen Amre was one those rare breed of players who achieved this by making 103 against South Africa at Durban in 1992-93 under difficult conditions, for a struggling side and against an attack that included Donald, Pringle and McMillan. But unfortunately his playing career did not pan out as expected. However, Amre has vast experience as a coach. The former India batsman, who played 11 Tests and 37 ODIs between 1992 and 1994, has coached Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy twice. Most recently, he was assistant coach of Delhi Daredevils for the 2015 and 2016 IPL seasons. Previously, he worked with Mumbai Indians and Pune Warriors.
Apart from that Amre has gained a reputation of being a superb one-on-one batting coach, having worked with, most notably, Ajinkya Rahane and Robin Uthappa. The likes of Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthik have also sought time from him. With a relatively young team, he can be a good coach for the players.

3. Sandeep Patil:

Undoubtedly the most experienced candidate in terms of coaching career, Sandeep Patil has previously coached India for a brief period (six months) in 1996. He tasted success as a coach with Kenya in 2003, when the minnows advanced to the semifinal of the World Cup. This stint of Patil’s adds credibility to his profile as BCCI seek an individual who has coached at first-class or international level before. After his Kenya stint, he returned to India for the next 18 months to coach India A. However it did not work out for him as he went back to a minnow, Oman this time, in the Intercontinental Cup and helped them qualify for the ICC Trophy after some strong performances in the ACC Trophy.
Later, Patil became the coach of the Mumbai Champs in the Indian Cricket League. Following a coaching stint with India’s National Cricket Academy in Bangalore, he was named chairman of the national selection panel in September 2012.

2. Anil Kumble:

In terms of cricket career, the retired spinner leaves behind all the other applicants by a huge distance. With 956 international wickets (619 in Tests and 337 in ODIs), India’s greatest match-winning bowler can bring a good blend of experience and dynamism in the young Indian side. While he will be unable to fulfill one of BCCI’s criteria for the coach which says that the candidate  “should have successfully coached a cricket team of any of the member countries of the ICC, at the first class or at the International level”, Team India would be blessed to have a coach like him.

In terms of coaching, Kumble has mentored IPL teams Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians. Past administrational profiles include serving as president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), chairman of the NCA when Patil was its director and head of the BCCI’s technical committee. Currently, Kumble chairs the ICC cricket committee.

1. Ravi Shastri:

Considered by many as the front-runner for the post, Ravi Shastri tasted good success with the Indian team as its director. He was appointed as the team director by the BCCI in August 2014 following defeat in the Tests in England. Shastri’s term was extended until the end of the 2015 World Cup by the BCCI working committee, and then again until the end of the World Twenty20 in March-April of this year. Under Shastri, the national team made it to the semi-final stage of 50-over World Cup and World T20, rose to No 1 in the ICC Test rankings for eight weeks and beat Australia in Australia in a historic 3-0 T20I series.
