Former India opener Gautam Gambhir applauded the efforts by the brave women and Justice Singh after the sentencing of Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan on basis of two rape charges.
The Delhi based cricketer seemed satisfied to watch justice prevail eventually after the chaos that ensued following the arrest of the tainted godman. Almost entire Indian states of Haryana and Punjab became of victim of riots from the blind followers of the baba.
The states witnessed arson, mobbing, stone pelting and intentional harm to public property over the course of last three four days. In all, a total of 38 lives have been lost due to the violence so far with many casualties yet to be reported officially. The dangerous effect of blind worshipping once again turned into a societal menace.
But, despite the pressure, the CBI court bench led by Jagdeep Singh sentenced the Dera Sacha Sauda chief to 20 years “rigorous imprisonment” — 10 years each for the rape of two disciples.
The decision was made in a makeshift court in Suneria jail near Rohtak. Justice Singh had to be flown in a helicopter and overhauled the defense lawyer’s leniency appeal on grounds of “social works” to make the landmark judgments.
Speaking in an inspirational manner, Justice Singh quoted Mahatma Gandhi to concede that a woman has “greater courage” than a man.
“To call a woman the weaker sex is a libel; it’s man’s injustice to woman. If by strength is meant brute strength, indeed, is woman less brute than man. If by strength is meant moral power, then a woman is immediately man’s superior. Has she not greater intuition, is she of more self-sacrificing, has she not greater powers of endurance, has she not greater courage? Without her, a man could not be,” he said.
“Bravo to d women, CBI court & Justice Singh. Now, let’s try 2 resolve over 1,37,458 pending rape trials (NCRB, 2015 data), they r our part too.”
