Gautam Gambhir Highlights The Missing Link In India’s World Cup Squad
India, on Monday, became the third nation after New Zealand and Australia to announce their squad for the upcoming Cricket World Cup 2019. No surprises then that there has been a widespread discussion over the squad as many expressed their views on who should have been left out, who should have made it or what it the best combination from the announced squad. Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has also come up with his own views on the squad. The legendary batsman, who was the top-scorer in the final of 2011 World Cup, gave his views on India’s pace attack.
As per expectations, the MSK Prasad-led selection panel named Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar as the frontline pacers. However, contrary to the popular speculations, there was no fourth pacer in the team. Hardik Pandya and Vijay Shankar can bowl medium pace but they are not frontline bowlers. With conditions in England likely to suit the fast-bowlers, a fourth frontline bowler would have been a wise decision. And Gautam Gambhir also feels the same.
Gambhir said that a fourth pacer is the only thing missing in the squad. The former India and Delhi star also said that he would have picked up Navdeep Saini in the team. Saini has impressed one and all with his sheer pace in the ongoing IPL as well as in domestic tournaments.
“If there is something missing in the squad, India lacks a fourth seamer. It is a big and long tournament. You have three seamers. Hardik and Vijay are your all-rounders. That’s why I picked Navdeep Saini as fourth seamer because in those conditions you need someone as a back up to your three seamers,” Gambhir was quoted as saying by TOI.
Gambhir was further asked to compare the team of 2011 World Cup and the current lot. In reply, Gambhir pointed out that he does not like comparisons but did say that the current squad is better.
“This is a better squad than 2011 and I really wish this is the better squad. You can’t compare eras. 2011 will be different to 2015, 2019 will be different to 2015 and I hope and believe that the 2019 squad is the better squad. All I want to say is that I don’t like comparing eras and one shouldn’t do that. The bowling attack of 2019 World Cup is far better than the ones in 2011 and 2015,” Gambhir stated.
