Gautam Gambhir not Included in Duleep Trophy: Is it the End of Road for the World Cup-Winning Star?
While many but Gautam Gambhir will welcome the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision to host the Duleep Trophy will be an exception. The traditional curtain-raiser of India’s domestic season is seen as the opportunity for the out-of-favour players to make a mark and strengthen their claim for a place in the national team.
However, with Gambhir not being included in the squads for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, it is a big hint that the left-handed batsman perhaps does not feature prominently in the scheme of things as far as Team India is concerned. He had led India Blue to Duleep Trophy glory last year and was also rewarded with a recall from the national team.
The southpaw, who was instrumental in India’s historic triumphs in the 2007 World T20 and 2011 World Cup, has lost his place in the Indian team and it is quite clear that he is unlikely to make a comeback again.
After being out of the team for around three years, he returned to the Test team last year during the series against New Zealand and England before being dropped midway after unimpressive performances and with the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay and KL Rahul impressing in recent times.
What makes the speculation even more strong is that he has been ignored despite being one of the top performers in this year’s Indian Premier League where he scored 425 runs at an impressive average of over 47 and led Kolkata Knight Riders to the playoffs.
Meanwhile, Yuvraj Singh’s exclusion from the squads has also raised a few eyebrows. Because the left-handed batsman has been struggling to perform consistently since making his ODI return earlier this year, he should have been given a chance to get back to his best, but the selectors have surprisingly left him out.
However, there can be another possibility which can be good news for the Punjab-born star. With the dates of Duleep Trophy and India’s upcoming ODI series against Australia set to clash, the selectors might not have included him in the Duleep Trophy squads to pick him for the ODI series.
