Out of favour Indian batsman is far from over, at least, his latest tweet suggests that. The southpaw, who was one of the most consistent performers of the team a few years ago, finally returned to the Indian Test team after a two-year hiatus during the New Zealand series.
Chances were looking bleak for him to get a call from the team but that did not deter him from working hard. He scored heavily in the domestic circuit and call for his inclusion became loud after his brilliant performance in this year’s Duleep Trophy. The Delhi batsman scored an impressive 356 runs in three matches. And he was duly rewarded for his perseverance when he replaced an injured KL Rahul during the New Zealand series.
A fighting half-century in the second innings of the final Test against New Zealand showed a glimpse of his old form. However, he performed poorly in the first Test against England and the selectors were quick to drop him and recall KL Rahul. The team management has made its intentions of giving the youngsters an extended run clear and it is very unlikely that Gambhir will get a call soon unless he performs really well in the domestic cricket. Anil Kumble’s statement on Rahul’s inclusion is another indication that the team is willing to include the youngster in the team.
Kumble had said:““Rahul is available for selection and you would want Rahul to be in the starting line-up, that’s the reason he has been included.”
However, the fighter he is, Gambhir is still not ready to give up. He tweeted:“Every great athlete was once a contender who never gave up!”
