The whole nation has been in shock following the violent protests by thousands of followers of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who is the head of Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda after the controversial godman was held convicted in a 2002 rape case by a special CBI court.
The situation deteriorated soon after the conviction was announced and Ram Rahim was taken into the custody. His followers went on the rampage setting fire to vehicles, buildings and railway stations. As per media reports, at least 30 people have died in the riots. The Indian army was deployed in Panchkula on Friday (August 25) shortly after the court found Ram Rahim guilty of the sexual assault.
But despite the forces being deployed, the riots became more violent and spread fast to parts of Punjab and soon reached the borders of Delhi. Several coaches of a train were also torched in Anand Vihar on the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border, and a bus was set on fire in Loni.
The protest to save a convict has shocked one and all across the country and Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir is also one of them.
Condemning the protests, Gambhir tweeted:
“Wonder what Ram & Rahim are thinking about the ‘Insaan’ & his misdeeds today! A classic case of religion marketing!”
