Exactly 9 years ago today, a young Indian team led by an inexperienced Mahendra Singh Dhoni created history when they defeated arch rivals Pakistan to win the inaugural ICC World T20 held in South Africa.
With the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid not in the team, very little was expected from the team but the new-looking Indian team defied all odds to create history. The Indian team defeated Australia, South Africa, England, and Pakistan on their way to glory and one man who played a very important role in the victorious campaign was Gautam Gambhir. He will be always remembered for his match-winning knock of 75 off only 54 balls in the final that helped the Indian team to post a respectable total of 157. India kept on losing wickets at regular intervals but Gambhir held firm from the other end. And he remained on the pitch till the 18th over and ensured India batsmen gave their bowlers something to bowl at. And in the end, it was enough as the Men in Blue won the final by 5 runs.
On the ninth anniversary of the historic match, Gambhir took to Twitter to remember his brilliant innings that he played in the final. Expressing his delight with his effort, he wrote: “Glad to have contributed to one of our most historic wins- 75 (54)!”
