IPL 2017: Gautam Gambhir Reveals What He Told His Teammates After First Innings Against RCB

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir has revealed that he left his cool during the mid-innings break before he addressed the team, as they managed to bowl out Royal Challengers Bangalore to just 49 in their historic win.

In his column in Hindustan Times, Gambhir wrote:

“For the first time in my seven years with KKR, I was fuming. The loss against Gujarat Lions was still haunting. On the back of that, we collapsed from 65 for 1 to 131 all out against RCB. It was unacceptable.”

He further revealed that he threatened his teammates that they would never play for Kolkata Knight Riders if they dropped their intent and the move literally paid dividends for KKR at the end of the game.

“I wanted intensity from my teammates. I wanted them to fight. I wanted them to win. I told them whoever dropped on intent should understand that this could be his last game for KKR, at least in my captaincy.

The KKR bowlers have run in and hit the deck hard having had only 132 runs to defend against a massive Royal Challengers Bangalore batting line-up that consisted the likes of Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle and Kedhar Jadhav.

For the hosts, Nathan Coulter-Nile has set up the tone with his first spell, as he removed three of the top order wickets while Umesh Yadav ran at Chris Gayle in their incredible six over spell where RCB batsmen hardly had any clue.

“During my stint with Justin Langer at Perth, I had seen Coulter-Nile train with the Western Australia state team. He is mean looking guy, strong as an ox. We didn’t speak a word as I passed the ball to him. He knew his job. The Aussie bowled like the wind and I supported him with attacking fields. My being under the helmet was more of a statement than a catching position,” he added.

The elegant southpaw has also praised Indian speedster Umesh Yadav who created all sorts of problems for Chris Gayle before removing him inside the powerplay, as RCB completely lost their way from there and were bowled out in just 9.4 overs, registering the lowest score ever in IPL history

“Then there was another sight which would have pleased every supporter of Indian cricket. An Indian fast bowler Umesh Yadav having ‘Boss of Universe’ Chris Gayle ducking and weaving was the highlight of the game,” he said of Umesh Yadav.

RCB will now face Sunrisers Hyderabad in Bengaluru, as they look to turn their poor campaign. However, it will not be an easy task for RCB, as they have not won any of the last three games they played against SRH.
