Gavaskar praises Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav

India won the first Test against West Indies at Antigua by an innings and 92 runs. This is India’s biggest margin of victory in terms of innings outside Asia. Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin played magnificent cricket. Apart from that, Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav took four wickets each to dismantle the opposition batting unit.

Former Indian great Sunil Gavaskar has heaped praises on pace duo Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav for their first innings bowling display in India’s win over West Indies in first Test at Antigua. After the visitors declared their innings at 566 for 8, the pace bowling duo took four wickets each to dismantle the opposition batting unit. Their spells proved catalyst as West Indies were bowled out for 243, and faced follow-on.

“The pitch at the Sir Viv Richards stadium is good one to bat on but for those bowlers who are prepared to bend their backs there is some bounce that can be found to trouble the batsmen,” said Sunil Gavaskar.

The duo used short ball to attack them. “That’s what Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav did as they used the short ball to good effect to rattle the Windies batsmen. How the wheel has turned? There was a time when the West Indian pacers would blast the opposition batsmen out with sheer pace but now it’s their batsmen who are doing the backward shuffle,” Gavaskar told.

Gavaskar, who is a part of the commentary panel for the series, also criticised West Indies’ new ball bowlers. “What was even more of a revelation was that their own new ball bowlers hardly used the short ball and this despite getting the first Indian wicket that of Murali Vijay to a very well-directed bouncer. Jason Holder opening the bowling and bowling at just over 130 kmph is hard to understand,” he said.

“If that is the best new ball bowling that the West Indians have to offer then Kohli & Co. should be able to enjoy a run feast in the remaining Test matches too,” he added.
