Gayle, Afridi and McCullum to be Part of Afghanistan Premier League
Big star players like Chris Gayle, Shahid Afridi, and Brendon McCullum will be part of the inaugural edition of the Afghanistan Premier League. The maiden season will kick in the month of October.
The first match of the Afghanistan Premier League is set to take place on October 5. Meanwhile, the final of the tournament will be held on 23 October. The Afghanistan Cricket Board also uncovered the logo of the tournament in the ceremony held in Dubai on Monday (27 August).
Afghanistan is all set to begin a new chapter.
Meanwhile, there would be five teams who will battle it out in the APL. Subsequently, the five teams are Kabul, Kandahar, Nangarhar, Paktia, and Balkh. Furthermore, players like Kumar Sangakkara, Shoaib Malik, Misbah ul Haq, Tamim Iqbal and Rashid Khan will partake in the competition.
The five teams will pick their players on a basis of a draft system in the first week of September.
“The Afghanistan Cricket Board has achieved in its short stint the Full Member status of the ICC (International Cricket Council) and Test status as well. We are delighted that today we witness the launch of our new league. It will provide global fans and audience an opportunity to watch top class T20 cricket,” Shafiqullah Stanikzai, CEO of the Afghanistan Cricket Board, said in Dubai on Monday.
“And the logo that we have unveiled today symbolizes the spirit of Afghanistan as a country. It represents the nature of the Afghan people who are truly patriotic and who now have fallen in love with the great game of cricket.”

Meanwhile, there will be 23 matches in the first season of the Afghanistan Premier League. Thus, the Afghanistan Cricket Board is expecting a good crowd at Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
“The rise of Afghanistan cricket has been phenomenal. The national team has performed brilliantly in recent years in international cricket. The cricket board has worked tirelessly to develop the sport in the country,” Atif Mashal, chairman of the Afghanistan Cricket Board, said on Monday.
“The success of Afghan players like Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, Mujibur Rahman in various T20 leagues in the world has set a great example for young players in Afghanistan. This has been one of the main motivations for our cricket board to start this new league. We want to give our young players the chance to play with international stars,” Mashal added.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan has taken giant strides in the cricket world in the recent past. Therefore, Afghanistan Premier League is another stepping stone in the development of cricket for the Afghan nation.
