The Story
The ongoing Women’s World Cup is serving great purposes apart from being just a cricket mega event. The women’s wing of the game has got highly important exposure, the following and viewership has increased drastically and the ladies are succeeding in motivating more and more young girls to take up cricket as a career.
The wave of interest sparked by likes of England’s wicket keeper Sarah Taylor, Australia’s skipper Meg Lanning is also already visible in their respective countries as a stunning number of girls are seen picking up the willow in the last few summers.
India, a similar sort of motivation has been sparked off by Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain and vice-captain of the India women’s team. While Mithali has been serving the game since a long time and was recently on a record breaking spree in the ongoing WWC, Harmanpreet Kaur, who had a silent so far, blasted one of the most memorable knocks in the tournament’s history yesterday to lead India to the final.
Harmanpreet’s third ODI century, which comprised of 20 fours and 7 sixes, also the second highest individual score in ODIs for India behind Deepti Sharma’s 188 not out against South Africa earlier this year.
Coming to bat in the first innings, Harmanpreet slammed an unbeaten knock of 171 from just 115 balls to push aside the Aussie challenge. Her contribution was the highest score by an Indian player, male or female, in a World Cup knockout match.
Proud Parents Deliver A Social Message
Making great use of the occasion Harmanpreet Kaur’s parent decided to spread a highly important social message rather than just relishing the special moment.
“Girls must be empowered, shouldn’t be killed in womb. The way my daughter made the country proud, other girls should also be encouraged,” she told ANI after her daughter’s heroics that powered India to a 36-run win over defending champions Australia in Derby.
Amid the celebrations at Harmanpreet’s home in Moga, her father Harminder Singh said, “We want her to further excel, win the World Cup and make the nation proud.”
