Glamorgan has secured the services of Australia star, Usman Khawaja as one their overseas players for the T20 Blast.
The left-handed batsman will join his compatriot Shaun Marsh at the top of the order.
The 31-year old is not a regular in Australia’s T20 team. As a result, he has played only nine T20I so far. However, he has proved his T20 credentials with some breathtaking performances in Big Bash League.
During the 2015-16 Big Bash League, he scored two centuries. The southpaw averages 32.73 with a strike-rate of 126.16 in the shortest format of the game. He has also plied his trade in the Indian Premier League for the Rising Pune Supergiant in the past. The Australian has had county stints with Derbyshire and Lancashire too in the past.
Expressing his delight over joining the English club, Khawaja said he is excited to join the club.
“I’m delighted to have signed for Glamorgan for their Vitality Blast campaign and look forward to the challenge of helping them build on the success they achieved in last year’s competition,” Khawaja said on Wednesday(April 18).
“From my point of view, it would be great to be able to take them a step further and bring silverware back to Wales. Glamorgan have some fantastic players in their squad, and I can’t wait to join up with the team and play with Shaun again,” he added.
Hugh Morris, club’s chief executive, welcomed the signing of Khawaja.
“We are delighted he has signed for us,” said Morris. “He is a top-class international player, and he has shown that this winter in the longer form of the game with Australia.
“But over the last two years, he has performed very well in T20 cricket in the IPL [Indian Premier League] and the Big Bash. He is looking forward to coming here. We have done well in T20 cricket, and we wanted to continue that,” he added.
