One of the biggest transitions in the Indian team in the recent times has been the face of bowling battery which includes the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah.
The Indian pacer had impressed in the recently concluded tour of South Africa. India won the third Test in Johannesburg, and the credit for the win must be given to the Indian pacers.
The Indian bowling attack managed to pick up 60 wickets in the three Tests which is an exceptional feat for the Indian pacers on an away tour.
Out of the 60 wickets picked by the Indian bowlers, only seven were taken by spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.
The rise of the Indian Pacers hasn’t been sudden; the fast bowlers have risen to the occasion gradually.
However, major credit should be given to the domestic circuit and the Indian coaching staff. Former Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath said Virat Kohli has the attack to pick up 20 wickets consistently.
“They are going well as a unit. If the bowlers can pick 20 wickets, then it’s perfect. Their pacers Mohammad Shami, Bhuvneshwar (Kumar), Bumrah and Hardik (Pandya) did the job. They are confident and are a quality attack at the moment.”
“I think the pitches in Australia won’t be that helpful as they were in South Africa. But they will still be better for pacers than what it is in India. It is great to pick so many wickets in one series. But to be the No. 1 side consistently, you need to have a solid attack. Indian pacers have got the ability, but they have to go out there and do it series after series consistently,”
McGrath is the director of the MRF pace academy and has lauded the bowlers for their exploits in Under-19 cricket and junior-level cricket.
The likes of Basil Thampi, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Khaleel Ahmed, Ankit Rajpoot, Aniket Choudhary, Avesh Khan and KM Asif are products of the academy. They will showcase their talent in the upcoming IPL.
“It’s been a great year for these boys. Nagarkoti impressed in U-19 WC and got picked by KKR. Playing in IPL is a bonus for him. He is young and has a big career is ahead of him. But it’s up to him to work further. When you bowl at good pace, there will be a load on the body. It’s tough getting to the top, but tougher staying there.
“Being slim doesn’t mean you are not strong. He has good wrist, rhythm and approaching the crease well. It’s a good sign,”
