In a watershed moment for South Africa cricket, the Main Player Draft for their inaugural T20 Global League was completed on Sunday (August 27) in a star-studded affair in Cape Town.
Each of the eight franchises had been allotted, both a big-name marquee South Africa player and an international marquee player, but the remaining 16 squad spots were filled on Sunday with 32 international players and 96 local players being picked by the various teams.
The Protea marquee players were allocated to each franchise during the launch ceremony in London in June while the international marquee players were auctioned on Saturday and the Main Player Draft saw another 16 players picked per squad, over 16 rounds, with eight selected picks in each round.
Each franchise owner was asked to choose the players during the event, with the first three players chosen to be South African. All-rounder Chris Morris, who plies his trade for Delhi Daredevils in Indian Premier League, was the first pick by the Durban Qalandars while Bloem City Blazers and Cape Town Knight Riders going for Dane Paterson and Dale Steyn.
