Veteran off-spinner, Harbhajan Singh, has opined that handing Steven Smith and David Warner a life ban would be quite harsh on them.
The 37-year old thinks a ban of 2 or 3 matches will be enough for the players,
“Both Smith and Bancroft should have been given harsher punishments. I will not say ban of 6 months or life ban but maybe 2 or 3 matches,” he told India today.
As per the reports which emerged earlier, both the players were in line to be banned for life. Reports suggest Steven Smith and David Warner will be banned for one year.
However, now, reports suggest both Warner and Smith may be a lot off with a one year ban.
Cricket Australia is currently investigating the matter, and a final verdict over it will come out tomorrow morning (March 28).
Looking at how cricket Australia is handling the matter, both the players are expected to be handed a ban for one year, which will be apt as banning them for life would do no good.
However, it has been confirmed that Australia will appoint a new captain as well.
As per the reports, Tim Paine will be officially handed the captaincy in the longest format of the game soon. In the limited overs format, Aaron finch seems to be the front-runner for the job.
Apart from these two players, the board will also take action against other player involved. The role of coaches can’t also be ignored, and they are also in line to tender their resignation.
Meanwhile, Smith had already stepped down from the post of captain of Rajasthan Royals. Ajinkya Rahane has replaced Steven Smith as Rajasthan Royals’ captain.
On the other hand, Sunrisers Hyderabad are not in a hurry and are waiting for the verdict of Cricket Australia. The franchise has decided that it will move forward after studying the decision of Cricket Australia.
There is no doubt that it (franchise) will have to remove Warner as captain as he is all set to be banned, as per the reports.
In SRH camp, Shikhar Dhawan seems to be an automatic replacement for Warner.
However, someone like Manish Pandey can also be looked up at by the franchise. In the meantime, Australian players are sweating over the investigation of Cricket Australia.
Presently, they are being interviewed by officials regarding the case, who then would pronounce a verdict after looking at all the facts.
