Harbhajan Singh may not be getting too much of the spotlight at the present, but that fact hasn’t stopped him from furthering the cause of cricket and giving back to the community.
The 34-year old spinner has opened a new cricket academy in Kolkata , with the aim of preventing the spread of substance abuse amongst the youth of India.
This is the fifth such academy he has opened, and he’s doing it solely to redirect the interest of the youth away from harmful drugs and towards the development of cricketing skills.
The focus is not on making money, he told the media, but rather on the development of crucial cricketing skills.
There are already four centres in Punjab, with another one coming up soon in Mumbai.
He feels it is his moral duty to give back to cricket what cricket has given him, he says.
However, he remains somewhat close to the idea of becoming a coach now or in the immediate future, saying that such a scenario is at least 4-5 years in the future, in the very least, saying that he has not given the matter too much thought.
He plans to regularly visit each of the facilities around the country and share his experiences with youngsters and help them get better at playing cricket.
