The Indian Eves might not have won the ICC Women’s World Cup in England, but the side returns home with heads held high. Not many gave the side a chance in the grand event, but game after game for the women in blue there stood some stupendous performances, which nearly took India to glory. Despite finishing second to England, the women have made the entire nation proud and this can be the beginning of a completely new era for women’s cricket.
Among those icons for India in the competition, was Punjab batter, Harmanpreet Kaur. The destructive batter put on a historic batting display against defending champions Australia in the semi final, as her knock of 171 not out remains etched in everyone’s memories.
For her heroics in the World Cup, the Punjab government also offered the youngster a post in the state police department. Thereby, it wasn’t surprising to know that once she returned to her native town of Moga, Kaur was welcomed in a grand fashion.
“This is new. I am not used to such starry welcomes,” said Kaur. “But this moment is hard-earned. I feel so proud. My hometown has never welcomed me this way before.”
Adding that more people had begun recognizing her, she said, “Now, this is something. They are recognising me now. Well, I have played in Moga for years but this moment was long awaited, not only for me but for all women cricketers in India.”
Kaur concluded by stating that her next ambition was to win India the women’s World T20 next year.
