The Independence Cup featuring Pakistan and World XI got underway on Tuesday, and after the first match, the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series. The series is more about the revival of cricket in Pakistan than anything else. However, the famous commentator Harsha Bhogle took a dig at the Faf du Plessis’ led side and said despite attracting a lot of attention the World XI team tends to lose always.

“The best thing about World XI kind of teams. They always attract a lot of attention, and they always lose!” He then clarified his words by saying:

“Having said that, I don’t think this series is about who is in the “World XI”. It is about playing cricket in Pakistan.”

But Harsha’s tweet showed him in a poor light especially after the efforts put in by the ICC and the other international cricketers to bring back cricket to Pakistan.

It was a giant stride taken by Pakistan in reviving cricket in the country. It is only the 2nd time an international match in Pakistan was held after the militant attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in 2009 which left several injured. The series has been accorded international status by the ICC and long before the match got underway, around 9,000 police officers, and paramilitary forces were deployed to different areas.

“I came here early to watch the teams come, but that was not possible due to security, so I only watched them on the ground, and it made my day,” a spectator was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, after batting first, Pakistan posted a challenging 197 on the board riding on a brilliant 86 by Babar Azam and a quick fire 38 by former captain Shoaib Malik. The World XI got off to a solid start, but couldn’t quite carry on and kept losing wickets. No batsmen could convert their starts which eventually led to their downfall.

With the introduction of cricket in Pakistan after a long time, the team management will be hopeful of staging many more series in the future. Sri Lanka is scheduled to visit Pakistan for a brief series. Meanwhile, there were as many as six players who played their first international match on their home soil. The list includes Babar Azam, Fahim Ashraf,  Fakhar Zaman, Shadab Khan, Rumman Raees and Hasan Ali.
