South Africa’s sensational cricketer, Hashim Amla has broken Virat Kohli’s and Sir Vivian Richards’ joint record for the fastest to reach 5000 runs in One-Day International (ODI) cricket during the 1st ODI against West Indies at Kingsmead, Durban. Amla has scaled this landmark in barely 101 innings.
During the year 2013, Virat Kohli had equaled Richards’ record against West Indies after reaching the landmark in 114 innings, but Amla has now overtaken and stands right on top of the list.
South Africa got off to a pretty shaky start after winning the toss and chose to bat first. But both, Rilee Rossouw and Faf Du Plessis were dismissed for ducks, leaving the Proteas in trouble at 16 for 2. However, the South Africans managed to rescue the South African innings as Amla along with ODI skipper AB De Villiers managed together a partnership of 99 for the 3rd wicket.
Just as the hosts were looking to take control of the match, excellent fielding by Andre Russell resulted in Amla being run-out for a fluent 66.
At the moment South Africa are 139/3 after 24 overs with de Villiers and David Miller at the crease.
