Trent Boult Vs Rohit Sharma In ODIs Will Be A Fascinating Match Up: Mike Hesson
After hosting two fascinating home assignments this new year, Virat Kohli & Co are now ready to face the hosts New Zealand for a-month-long international assignments. Denoting the anticipated clash, former New Zealand head coach Mike Hesson said that it would be delightful to watch Trent Boult against Rohit Sharma in the limited-overs games. He expressed his excitement for the game and suggested a few important points to mull over before the tour starts.
India will start their tour with a five-match shorter format game from the 24th January, and that will go on till 2nd February. The squad for the T20 internationals has been announced which revealed that allrounder Hardik Pandya will still be out and practice till he recovers fully.
India started their T20I campaign of this year with a victorious home series against Sri Lanka (by 2-0). Later, they won the home ODI series against Australia by the 2-1 margin. This will eventually pave the way for the team in the upcoming coveted T20 World Cup that will be hosted by Australia in October-November this year.
Commenting on India’s stature for the upcoming premier tournament, Hesson said there are areas of concern in the team. Meanwhile, he also suggested assessing Shivam Dube in the next series as New Zealand serves with similar conditions to Australia.
“No areas of concern, just the time-frame they place on finalizing the balance of T20 World Cup squad. Without Hardik Pandya on this tour, it provides an excellent opportunity to assess the capabilities of Shivam Dubey in conditions similar to those in Australia (host of T20 World Cup),” Hesson said.
Hesson keen to witness Trent Boult against Rohit Sharma
On the other hand, Hesson is more excited to see Trent Boult and Rohit Sharma facing off each other in the limited-overs series. In a conversation with Times of India, he said that New Zealand’s middle-order against Kul-Cha (Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal) would be the key to the game.
“Trent Boult versus Rohit Sharma in ODIs will be a fascinating match up with a little bit of swing on offer,” Hesson told The Times of India. “The New Zealand middle-order against the wrist spinners Kuldeep (Yadav) and (Yuzvendra) Chahal will be the key middle-over match-ups. Hopefully, Trent will be back for the ODI series as he is a key player for NZ in taking new-ball wickets.”
Boult, meanwhile, will not be taking part in the twenty-overs series as he is still into recovery from a finger injury. But he is expected to be back by the time ODI games kick-off.
Meanwhile, Rohit will once again be opening for the team in the long-version of cricket. He already had amazing innings against South Africa in the home Test series. It will be the first time when he will open in red-ball cricket outside India.
“Rohit just has to play close to the body in the first session and not go hard at the ball. If he does that, he will enjoy the batting conditions in New Zealand,” he said.
Furthermore, talking about Test cricket, Hesson believes that India has well-refined seam bowlers that will help them counter the conditions in New Zealand. He said that it would be highly unlikely for the Men in Blue to have another 2014 Test tour where the visitors were defeated by 1-0.
“New Zealand are very hard to beat at home as you can see by their recent record. I however see India having a far more suitable seam bowling attack than they had back in 2014 which means this will be a very even and competitive series,” he said.
India last toured New Zealand for two-match Test cricket series in 2014. The visitors lost the series by 1-0 as the second game was drawn while the first one in Auckland was won by the Black Caps by 40 runs.
