Highlights: Day 1 of Second Test match

Let’s take you on a tour of series of events that happened throughout the day in our highlights section –

Early blows from Ishant Sharma – Ishant Sharma had a good start to the match as he was seen troubling the batsmen from the first bowl of the game itself. He was testing the batsmen skills and without wasting any time effected the first dismissal of the day in third over of the game. He did wonders on the next ball too and sent back in-form Darren Bravo to be on a hat-trick. He was bowling tight line and lengths and was seen troubling the batsman with his skills and experience. He along with Shami provided a good start to the Indian cricket team which was later cashed in by the spinners.

Sloppy Saha drops catches – It was not one of the best days for Wridddhiman Saha behind the stumps as he went drop two chances within starting 12 overs of the game. In the second over of the game, Saha dropped a low catch which was given a not out by the on-field umpires. On the next occasion, he dropped experienced Marlon Samuels who played one on the leg side towards wicket keeper but again Saha failed to gather the catch. It was the second drop within 12 overs which once again reminded us of M.S. Dhoni, who now do not play this format.

The rescue act from Samuels and Blackwood – In order to save their team from being bowled out early, Samuels and Blackwood joined hands and were able to rescue the team to some level. Both had their own style of batting as Samuels took 30 balls to open his account whereas Blackwood showed his T20 skills and scored 62 off 62 balls.

Samuels went in ultra-slow mode and ensured that his team do not suffer another blow for few overs. He and Blackwood shared a partnership of 81 runs and rescued team from a difficult situation. Blackwood was the main force in this partnership as he out of 81 runs, his contribution was of 62 runs. He increased up the pace at which the runs were scored and helped West Indies team to post few runs on the board.

R. Ashwin show – No batsman in the West Indies batting line-up had answers to questions asked by the Indian off-spinner. None of them was able to read his bowling as he mixed up his balls with plenty of variations he has in his bag. He played a crucial role in wrapping up the West Indies innings below 200. He ended the day with figures of 52/5, thus claiming a five-wicket haul for the second consecutive time. With this, he has proved that he will be a big factor in the upcoming Test matches and the West Indies team has to be wary of him.

India safe at stumps – Following a brilliant show with the ball, the Indian team continued its brilliance with the bat too and finished the day with a score of 126/1 on the board. KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan shared 87 runs for the first wicket. Dhawan lost his wicket on the score of 27 but after his dismissal, Pujara and KL Rahul went on to drive the team’s boat like a safe helmsman. Both are standing not-out on the crease with Pujara on a score of 18* and KL Rahul on 75*. Surely if KL Rahul continues to bat like this, then a century for him is there for sure which he will score tomorrow morning.

The only aim for Indian team will be to score as many runs as they can in next two days so as to have plenty of time to dismiss West Indies team in the second innings. A lead of 400-500 will be enough to seal a comfortable victory here.
