History to be made as the world to witness 1000th Women ODI in the history

Today, history will be made the moment New Zealand women and South African women will play the third ODI of the series at Kimberley as it will be the one-thousandth ODI in the history of women cricket. The first ever ODI of women cricket was played in the year 1973 with Women’s world cup played in England. The forty year journey will now enter into a millennium from today as it’s a great achievement for Women’s cricket.

However, the journey from first ODI to thousandth ODI has gone ahead at the speed of a snail as it took almost 40 years for women’s cricket to achieve this landmark whereas the men’s cricket, which started just 2 years prior to women’s cricket has already witnessed a total of 3795 ODI’s. The difference between the numbers of games between two genders is appalling which shows the negligence of country’s Boards and ICC towards women cricket.
We hardly see any vacant time during the year when there is no men’s cricket but expecting women’s cricket to go around throughout year is a rare and unseen case. Further, the negligence of media and no coverage of women cricket add to its woes. Empty stands are not rare scenes in women’s cricket, be it world cup or any big event as well.

But this does not mean that women cricketers any far behind men cricketers in terms of standards and talent as you would be surprised to know that Sachin Tendulkar was not the first player to score a double century in ODI’s, it was the Australian player Belinda Clark who owned the record 13 years before Sachin Tendulkar reached this record.
There are many other records as well where women crickets are far ahead of men’s. Surely, if country boards and ICC pay some more attention towards women cricket, then we may see women cricket getting equal attention as well.

Talking of the Indian women’s team, the Indian ladies till now has participated in 225 ODI’s, which is not even somewhere close to ODI’s played by Sachin Tendulkar alone. In this handful of ODI’s, the Indian women have won 117 games whereas has had lost 103 games out of that. 1 game ended in tie whereas 4 games were abandoned.

Mithali Raj, the Indian captain, and the batsman is the second highest run-scorer in women’s cricket with a tally of 5301 run 149 innings. Jhulan Goswami, the strike Indian bowler with 175 wickets stands second in the list of most wickets in women cricket.
Surely, paying some more attention to women cricket can change the fortune of women’s cricket as well. Rest depends on upon those sitting in authority and running cricket the way they need to run this game.
