World T20I
ICC initially decided to host the next WT20 in 2020 in Australia, but the success of the 2016 World T20 in India forced them to change the mind. The world cricket’s governing body understood that the T20I cricket is key to cricket’s commercial gain and this format could be used as a medium of cricket’s expansion in new countries. In recent time news is coming from countries where other sports are popular but cricket is getting a foothold.
So keep the popularity buoyant ICC decided to host two more WT20 between 2020. Initially, ICC planned to host the WT20 in every two years. But a four-year gap, they understood, may discourage countries who are interested in this format.
For the WT20 in India ICC hosted a qualifying round in Ireland and Scotland where six Associate members have qualified and Afghanistan were the only Associate team who qualified for the top ten after another qualifying round in India. With T20I suit for the multisport events like Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and the Olympic ICC doesn’t want to change the schedule.
