Former India skipper MS Dhoni finally ended all the speculations surrounding his career in international cricket as he called time on his career on Saturday (August 15). But while his retirement was pretty much on the cards and thus it did not surprise many, the way of his retirement has left many disappointed.
A player of MS Dhoni’s stature deserves a grand farewell. It won’t be entirely wrong to state that no cricketer has made an impact in Indian cricket as MS Dhoni. The veteran has retired as India’s most decorated captain and wicketkeeper-batsman. While redefining the role of wicketkeeper-batsman in the game, he took Indian cricket to unprecedented heights.
No surprises, there are calls from all around to conduct a farewell game for MS Dhoni. And while only time will tell whether MS Dhoni plays a farewell game or not, former India batsman VVS Laxman has talked about where the wicketkeeper-batsman is likely to play his farewell match. The batting legend said that he believes MS Dhoni would play his farewell match at the Chepauk, just like the legendary Sachin Tendulkar ended his career at the Wankhede Stadium.
“Number one is we all have to recognize that he (Dhoni) is very passionate about CSK. One of the reasons CSK has been the most successful franchise has been MS Dhoni’s leadership. So, he will go out and he will do everything possible for CSK to win the trophy. But as far as the fans are concerned, I think the euphoria will be there to be seen.
“Till the time he is going to play cricket, he will be captaining CSK. I think each and every movement of MS Dhoni will be watched very closely, will be relished by each and every cricketing fan of his. So, they will enjoy each and every moment MS Dhoni spends on the cricket field,” Laxman said in the Star Sports’ show Cricket Connected.
“I think MS Dhoni’s farewell game will be whenever he plays his last match for CSK. And I can tell you for sure, just like the way Sachin had that farewell match at the Wankhede, I think the farewell match will be at the Chepauk.
“And all the fans, not only at the ground but around the world, not only the Indian fans but all the cricketing fans will be watching that last game of MS whenever that will happen,” he added.
MS Dhoni will be seen in action soon when the IPL gets underway next month. IPL 2020 is scheduled to take place from September 19 to November 10. The former India cricketer has not played a single competitive game since India’s World Cup exit in July last year.
