West Indies skipper Shai Hope questioned the attitude of their team players coming into the ODI World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe as he feels the team did not give their 100 percent on the field and ruined the lack of preparation coming into the high-pressure event.
The Caribbean team was eliminated in the race to qualify for the ODI World Cup later this year in India after their seven-wicket loss to Scotland in a Super Six match West Indies have zero points in Super Six and they will now be able to reach only 4 points if they win the next two games.
Speaking to the broadcaster after their loss against Scotland, Shai Hope feels that the team has failed as he cannot point his finger on a single thing and also questioned the attitude of the players on the field as they were a lot of missed opportunities on the field and shed light on the lack of preparation as a factor coming into the big event in Zimbabwe.
“To be honest, it’s not one thing I can put my finger on. We certainly let ourselves down in the tournament it has to do with the attitude. The fielding is an attitude according to me, catches will be dropped and misfields will happen, that’s part of the game and I feel that we did not give 100 percent effort every time, we did it in patches,” he added.
“It starts with the foundation — from back home, the preparation needs to be better. We cannot come here and expect to be an elite team without preparation. You can’t expect to wake up one morning and be a great team,” Shai Hope said.
West Indies players failed to step up on the field in the crunch moments as they lost the game after being in a comfortable position against Zimbabwe and Netherlands in the previous game, before losing the match in the final moments to crash the ODI World Cup race.
We Have To Understand Each Other Even More – Shai Hope
Shai Hope wants his team to find a way to do well in the remaining two games of the super six stage and believes that the team has got the talent to do well in the bigger stages as he wants the team to perform consistently and added that the players need to play understand each other going forward.
“We have two more games and we need to find a way to bounce back. The talent is there, I always believe that, but we need to translate that into consistent performances. We have to understand each other even more and we have to go one way and that’s up,” Shai Hope added.
The West Indies skipper will look to inspire his team going into the final two games of the Super Six followed by home series against India starting with a test series on July 12.
