I Had Applied For The Head Coach Job Long Back – Ravi Shastri

The news of Ravi Shastri applying for the Head Coach on June 3 did not come up as a surprise, as the former Indian captain had already confirmed that he will throw his hat in the ring to replace Anil Kumble. But when asked when did he apply for the job, Shastri replied “a long back,” quotes The Hindu.

It clearly means that Shastri sent his application from London the day he announced that he will join the list for the job. At that time, he said that he will apply for it after landing in India but he had done his task before he arrived in his country, not showing any delay in putting his eagerness in front to grab the coveted job. With this, he has emerged as the strongest contender to succeed Anil Kumble and become the new Head Coach of the Indian cricket team. He had earlier worked with Indian team from 2014-2016, in the capacity of team director.

During that period, he developed a strong relationship with Virat Kohli, who became Indian Test skipper just four months after Shastri took over the reins. It was being said that with such a rapport between two taking the centre stage, it created a bit of insecurity in MS Dhoni, which resulted in him retiring from Test cricket, handing over the baton to Virat Kohli.

He stayed with the Indian team till 2016 before Anil Kumble was appointed as the Head Coach in June last year. It was a big surprise as not just Shastri, but the whole cricketing world was confident of the former taking up the post but as soon as the result was announced, it left everyone shell-shocked.

Team Indian welcomed Anil Kumble with open arms but due to a clash of ideas between Kohli and Kumble right from the offset, Kumble made an exit from the job as soon as his contract ended and again, the name of Shastri brewed up in the air. (Read Here: BCCI To Organise Mini IPL In UAE)

Unsurprisingly, BCCI pushed the date of the submission until July 9 and Shastri made most of the opportunity. This time though he will take the interview process with utmost seriousness, unlike last year, where he preferred to appear before the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) through Skype, rather than being present at the time of interview in person.
